Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who succumbed to serious injuries sustained in a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match.
The 30-year-old striker suffered head and chest injuries after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in the closing stages of Monday’s match at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez in Tenerife.
Medical personnel attended to De Miguel immediately and rushed him to the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
He reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch but was resuscitated. His condition was initially described as stable but serious before deteriorating neurologically on Tuesday morning. He died at around 8 a.m. local time.
Spain’s National Police confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Prosecutors are also expected to be involved. The investigation does not, by itself, establish criminal responsibility.
The match was abandoned following the collision, while Owono was shown a straight red card by the referee.
Andorra expressed condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and Tenerife. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin also conveyed his grief, saying the governing body stood with everyone affected by the loss.
UEFA has announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all its matches this week in memory of the Spanish forward.
De Miguel had represented several clubs in Spain’s lower divisions before helping Tenerife earn promotion to the Segunda Division last season.
