Music composer Anu Malik has recalled the struggles he faced while trying to establish himself in the Hindi film industry and the emotional motivation behind his determination to succeed — his desire to see his father, veteran composer Sardar Malik, free from professional disappointment.
In an old conversation with lyricist Sameer that has resurfaced online, Anu described the difficulties of finding work when the industry was dominated by established composers such as R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
He recalled that recording studios, including Mehboob Studio, Film Center and Famous Studio, were usually booked, while getting opportunities to work with leading singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar was equally difficult.
Anu said he would wait outside Mehboob Studio for hours, hoping to catch a producer’s attention and persuade someone to listen to his compositions.
He also recalled the much-discussed story of how he managed to get a film opportunity by making a director listen to his song in a bathroom.
Explaining what drove him through those difficult years, Anu said he could not bear to see his father’s talent go unrecognised and witness his pain.
He remembered how Sardar Malik would watch him from a distance and smile as his career began to take off. “His smile was everything,” Anu said.
The composer also shared an emotional memory of spotting his father standing at a bus stop after he had started finding success. He asked why his father was waiting for a bus, bought a car and told him that both the vehicle and its driver would be at his disposal from then on.
The recollection offers a glimpse into the personal motivation behind Anu Malik’s early career struggles and the importance of his father’s happiness in his journey.
