Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday accused the Congress central leadership of ignoring Punjab’s pressing issues, saying party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi were visiting the state primarily to unite its divided leadership ahead of the Assembly elections.
Jakhar said Congress had remained absent as an Opposition party for four years and nine months and had now emerged only with elections approaching. He identified drugs, gangsterism and corruption as Punjab’s major concerns and alleged that Congress leaders themselves were facing allegations linked to these issues.
Questioning the party’s ability to tackle drugs and gangsterism, Jakhar alleged that two former Punjab Congress presidents had been linked to drugs, while another former minister had faced an investigation over alleged patronage and sheltering of a gangster.
On the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Jakhar said Punjab Congress had not protested during the exercise. He claimed state Congress leaders had instead congratulated the Chief Electoral Officer on its smooth completion. He also challenged the party to produce even one case of an eligible voter whose name had been wrongly deleted from the rolls.
Jakhar accused Congress of using SIR and electronic voting machines (EVMs) as excuses for its electoral defeats, alleging that the party had failed to work in the public interest.
Questioning Congress leaders’ silence on alleged corruption under the Bhagwant Mann government, Jakhar cited allegations involving bus body fabrication in Rajasthan and the recovery of Rs 10 crore in cash from the residence of a leading Congress chief ministerial contender. He alleged that Congress leaders were themselves embroiled in corruption-related controversies.
Jakhar further said Rahul Gandhi’s visit was aimed at warning the divided Punjab unit to work together, as he had done during his visit to Barnala. He argued that unity without a common purpose would have little foundation and accused Congress of drifting away from issues affecting the people.
