New Delhi, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday challenged Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to debate in Parliament, responding to his demand for a public face-off with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Taking to X, Gupta issued an “open challenge” to the Congress leader, asking him to come to Parliament rather than seek a debate at a venue of his choice.

She invoked the Emergency imposed in 1975 and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to attack the Congress leadership’s political legacy. Gupta accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of suppressing democracy during the Emergency and referred to the violence against Sikhs in Delhi in 1984, when Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister.

The Delhi Chief Minister also pointed to the Congress party’s defeats in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, suggesting that another electoral setback was a major concern for the Opposition.

Gupta’s remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi challenged Prime Minister Modi to a public debate over his allegations that the Opposition was being labelled anti-national and had links with foreign forces.

In his post on X, Gandhi had asked the Prime Minister to select any venue for the discussion and questioned who had links with foreign forces. He also urged Modi not to avoid the challenge.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had similarly asked Gandhi to use Parliament as the platform for the proposed debate, pointing out that he serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Sitharaman also referred to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s offer of a special parliamentary session to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). She questioned why Gandhi was not showing the same enthusiasm for a debate inside Parliament as he was displaying through social media challenges.

The exchange has triggered another round of political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Congress over the appropriate forum for debating issues of national importance.
