The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tarsem Lal, posted at Dirba police station in Sangrur district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.
A VB spokesperson said the arrest followed a complaint by a resident of Anaj Mandi, Bhawanigarh. The complainant alleged that the ASI had demanded Rs 30,000 to avoid conducting a raid to arrest him in connection with another case. The conversation regarding the alleged bribe demand was also recorded.
Unwilling to pay, the complainant approached the VB Range, Patiala. Acting on the complaint, the bureau laid a trap and caught Tarsem Lal red-handed while accepting Rs 25,000 in the presence of two official witnesses.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the VB police station in Patiala. Further investigation is underway.
