Washington, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Three Indian-American Democrats emerged as winners in the US midterm elections, with Pia Dandiya capturing a congressional seat in Florida, Suhas Subramanyam securing re-election in Virginia and Aruna Miller returning as Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor. Meanwhile, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy was trailing Democrat Amy Acton in the closely watched Ohio governor’s race as counting continued.

According to a CBS News projection, Dandiya defeated Republican Casey Askar in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District. A former school principal and White House fellow, she campaigned on education, affordability and economic opportunity. Her victory adds another Indian-American woman to the US Congress.

In Virginia, Democratic Congressman Subramanyam won a second term from the 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican Dave Beckwith and independent candidate Ahsen Malik, according to an NBC News projection.

Subramanyam, who became Virginia’s first Indian-American member of Congress in 2024, said his priorities for the new term would include protecting federal workers, reducing living costs, addressing healthcare cuts and establishing safeguards for artificial intelligence and data centres.

In Maryland, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller secured another term after Democratic Governor Wes Moore defeated Republican Dan Cox, according to a CBS News projection.

The results in Ohio presented a contrasting picture for Indian-American Republican Ramaswamy. Acton maintained a lead, although the margin narrowed as counting progressed. An NBC News snapshot, with around 46 per cent of the expected vote counted, showed Acton at 54.3 per cent and Ramaswamy at 42.8 per cent. The contest had not been called at that stage.

Ramaswamy, a biotechnology entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, is seeking to succeed term-limited Governor Mike DeWine.

Elsewhere, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms was projected to win Georgia’s governor’s race against Republican Rick Jackson. If confirmed, she would become the first Black woman elected governor in US history, ending more than two decades of Republican control of the state governorship. In Florida, Republican Byron Donalds was projected to defeat Democrat David Jolly and succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis.

Indian-American candidates also made encouraging gains in state legislative contests. In Georgia, Democrat Jyot Singh led Republican Yassin Moghazy in House District 97. In Pennsylvania, incumbent Arvind Venkat was ahead of Republican Libby Blackburn, while Illinois state Representative Nabeela Syed led Republican incumbent Darby Hills in the Senate District 26 contest.

However, in North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Valerie Foushee was projected to defeat Indian-American Republican Mahesh Ganorkar.

At the national level, Democrats gained a Republican-held Senate seat in North Carolina, where former Governor Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff also won re-election in Georgia, while Chris Pappas captured New Hampshire’s Senate seat.
