Punjab opened its campaign at the 78th Senior, 55th Junior and 41st Sub-Junior National Track Cycling Championships in Ranchi with a gold medal, as international cyclist Harshveer Singh Sekhon clinched first place in the senior individual 10 km scratch race on Sunday.
Sekhon delivered a strong performance against a competitive field to secure the top spot, giving the Punjab contingent an encouraging start at the national championships being held in Jharkhand.
Cycling Association Punjab General Secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon said the victory had lifted the morale of the state’s cyclists ahead of the remaining events. He credited Sekhon’s achievement to the rider’s hard work, the guidance of coaches and the collective efforts of the association.
Kahlon pointed out that this was Punjab’s first participation in the national track cycling championships since the association’s new management team was constituted a few months ago. He expressed confidence that the team would maintain its momentum and deliver strong performances in the coming events.
Highlighting Sekhon’s international record, Kahlon said the cyclist had represented India at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games and won several international medals. He added that the latest national title would encourage aspiring cyclists in Punjab.
