Amritsar, October 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will convene its general house session on November 20 to elect its president and other office-bearers for the coming year. The decision was taken at a meeting of the SGPC’s Executive Committee held under the leadership of President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.
The general session will be held at 12 noon at Teja Singh Samundri Hall, located at the SGPC headquarters. The elections will be conducted for the posts of president, senior vice-president, junior vice-president, general secretary and members of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee also approved several other important decisions during the meeting.
SGPC Approves Installation of Bhai Parvinder Singh’s Portrait
Through a resolution, the Executive Committee strongly condemned the murder of Bhai Parvinder Singh, who had been campaigning against drug abuse.
The resolution expressed serious concern over the growing drug menace in Punjab and alleged that instead of taking effective action against narcotics, the government was acting against those raising their voices against the menace. It stated that Bhai Parvinder Singh had also fallen victim to the government’s alleged failure to tackle the problem.
To ensure that his struggle to save Punjab’s youth from drug addiction and the sacrifice he made for the cause are remembered, the Executive Committee approved the installation of his portrait at the Central Sikh Museum located within the Sri Darbar Sahib complex.
SGPC Condemns Police Action Against Anti-Drug Protesters in Mansa
The Executive Committee strongly condemned the registration of an FIR against around 40 young people who participated in an ongoing anti-drug protest in Mansa, the arrest of some protesters, the removal of turbans from Sikh participants and alleged mistreatment of women during the police action.
The resolution stated that rescuing Punjab’s younger generation from the grip of drugs was an urgent necessity. It said the government and administration should encourage young people who raise their voices against drug abuse rather than initiate police action against them.
The committee described the alleged removal of turbans and mistreatment of women during the protest as actions that undermined democratic values and sought to suppress the legitimate voice of the youth.
The SGPC strongly urged the Punjab government to immediately withdraw the FIR registered against the protesters, release those arrested without delay and take strict action against individuals involved in the drug trade instead of targeting those speaking out against narcotics.
Rs 2.5 Lakh Assistance for Family of Bhai Manpreet Singh
The Executive Committee also expressed grief over the death of Bhai Manpreet Singh, who suffered an electric shock while removing a poster during a protest held in response to the murder of Bhai Parvinder Singh.
The committee approved financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh for Manpreet Singh’s family.
During the meeting, the committee also approved financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each for 479 Sikh religious soldiers who had rebelled in protest against the attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib by the Congress government of the time in June 1984.
In addition, the committee decided to grant a 3 per cent dearness allowance to SGPC employees.

Before the meeting, SGPC members observed a prayerful tribute to member Amarjit Singh Bhalaipur, Jathedar Suba Singh Dabbwala and Shaheed Bhai Parvinder Singh, who had passed away. The members recited the Mool Mantar and Gur Mantar in remembrance of the departed souls.
