India batter Jemimah Rodrigues announced on Friday that she has recovered from a hamstring injury that kept her out of action for three months, potentially paving the way for her return to the national team for the multi-format tour of South Africa in December.
“Life Update: HAMSTRING HAS BEEN DECLARED FIT!!!!!!!! After 3 months of rehab. Now I can’t wait to get going,” Jemimah wrote on her Instagram account on Friday.
The 26-year-old suffered a tear in her right hamstring while playing for Southern Brave against Welsh Fire in England’s Women’s Hundred earlier this year. Subsequent scans at the BCCI Centre of Excellence confirmed a high-grade tear, ruling her out of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE, the Asian Games in Japan and India’s recently concluded white-ball series against Zimbabwe at home.
With no immediate international or franchise cricket commitments, Jemimah is expected to represent Mumbai in the ongoing Senior Women’s T20 Trophy before the national selectors finalise the squad for India’s all-format tour of South Africa.
The tour will begin with a one-off Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha from December 9. This will be followed by three ODIs: the first at Boland Park in Paarl on December 16, the second at Newlands in Cape Town on December 19 and the third at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on December 22.
The tour will conclude with three T20 Internationals. The opening match will be played at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on December 26, followed by the remaining two games at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on December 29 and 30.
Jemimah’s return to fitness coincides with the first anniversary of her memorable unbeaten 127 against Australia in the ODI World Cup semi-final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Her innings helped India reach the final, where the hosts went on to lift the trophy.
India were chasing a target of 339 that night and lost both openers early. Jemimah and then-captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored 89, revived the innings with a 167-run partnership for the third wicket.
Jemimah remained unbeaten until the end as India completed the chase with nine balls to spare in one of the most memorable run chases in women’s cricket.
She also benefited from a couple of reprieves during the innings. Then-Australia captain Alyssa Healy dropped her on 82, while Australia lost a review shortly afterwards when an lbw appeal off Alana King’s bowling was turned down.
Jemimah’s unbeaten 127 off 134 balls remains the highest individual score by an Indian women’s batter in an ODI run chase. The innings also ended Australia’s streak of 15 consecutive victories at Women’s ODI World Cups.
