Lucknow, October 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented in Uttar Pradesh if the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returns to power in the state for a third consecutive term following the 2027 Assembly elections.

Shah made the announcement while addressing the inauguration of the BJP’s state executive committee meeting in Lucknow, organised as part of the party’s preparations for the upcoming Assembly polls.

Uttar Pradesh BJP President and Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, both Deputy Chief Ministers and other senior party leaders were present at the event.

Addressing party workers, Shah urged them to set aside personal grievances and ambitions, strengthen the organisation and treat the next Assembly election as their own battle.

Taking aim at Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Shah said the BJP would respond to his “meaningless statements” by forming the government again in Uttar Pradesh in 2027.

Shah also criticised the Samajwadi Party (SP) and its chief, Akhilesh Yadav, recalling the firing on unarmed Ram devotees and kar sevaks in Ayodhya during the then SP government.

“Today was the day when unarmed Ram devotees and kar sevaks were fired upon indiscriminately in Ayodhya during the then SP government and the water of the Saryu river turned red with their blood,” he said.

Questioning the SP’s claim to power, Shah asked how the party could seek to form the government in Uttar Pradesh again.

The Home Minister further described the BJP government in the state as “Angad’s leg”, invoking the Hindu mythological figure from the Ramayana to assert that opposition parties could not dislodge it.

He also recalled the contribution of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, saying that he had taken a historic decision in support of the Ram Temple movement “without caring about his government then”.

Targeting both the Congress and the SP, Shah said the SP had been losing elections continuously under Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership, while the Congress had failed to return to power under Rahul Gandhi.

“If the opposition continued on the same path, it would remain out of power for a long time,” he remarked.

Emphasising the importance of the government’s achievements, Shah said the BJP’s greatest strength lay in its cadre. He stressed that the party organisation had the responsibility of communicating the Centre’s and state government’s developmental work to the public.

“The Centre and the state government have undertaken extensive developmental work, and it is now the responsibility of the party organization to communicate these achievements to the public,” he said.

Expressing confidence in BJP workers, Shah asserted that the party would remain politically strong across India, including Uttar Pradesh, for the next 30 years.

He praised the Yogi Adityanath government for its efforts to improve law and order and attract investment to the state.

“Even if the work done during the Samajwadi Party and BSP governments were combined, it would still fall short of what the Yogi government had achieved in a single term,” Shah asserted.

He added that the Narendra Modi-led central government had provided adequate funds for Uttar Pradesh’s development and that Chief Minister Adityanath had implemented central schemes with “full commitment”.

Shah also credited Adityanath with taking “effective action” to dismantle the mafia network in the state, while launching another attack on the Opposition.

Reiterating the BJP’s commitment to the Uniform Civil Code, Shah declared that the legislation would be implemented in Uttar Pradesh if the party formed the government for a third time.

Referring to the abrogation of Article 370, he said the BJP had fulfilled its promise and claimed that no major violence had occurred during the process. He also reiterated the government’s goal of making India drug-free by December 2029.

Shah claimed that incidents of rioting in Uttar Pradesh had declined by 70 per cent since the BJP-led NDA came to power. He urged party workers to explain to the public the challenges the state could face if the BJP lost power.

Responding to Opposition allegations of “vote theft”, Shah said that after suffering repeated electoral defeats, opposition parties were blaming the Election Commission for their failures.

He asserted that the BJP was ready to discuss the issue in Parliament and challenged the Opposition to a “special session” in which every allegation could be examined and answered.

Referring to the BJP’s recent electoral performances in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, Shah said the Opposition had become “complacent” about electoral numbers, while the BJP had strengthened its position across several states.

He cited the formation of the BJP’s first government in Odisha, its victories in Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar and Assam, and its return to power in Delhi after a long gap.

Recalling the period when former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was in office, Shah said the BJP had transformed the challenges it once faced into strengths, despite being mocked in its earlier years.

“Today, Narendra Modi has become Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, and the National Democratic Alliance governs 22 states,” he said.

Shah also recalled the BJP’s electoral performance in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 and 2017, noting that the party had a limited number of MLAs in the state in 2014. He said this had prompted him to work at the tehsil level to strengthen the organisation.

“As a result, the BJP won 73 seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with 41 per cent of votes,” he said.
