Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took a dig at the Congress over its performance in the recently held Legislative Council (MLC) elections across four states, highlighting that the polls were conducted using ballot papers.
The Congress has reportedly failed to win a seat in three states, while counting was underway for five seats in Maharashtra, according to the report.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi referred to the MLC elections covering 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka.
“Elections held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won?” the Prime Minister remarked, taking aim at the party’s electoral performance.
The remarks come amid demands by opposition parties for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The election results have also drawn attention as the INDIA bloc prepares to hold a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1 over its allegations of vote theft. The proposed rally has faced opposition from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), traders and members of the Sikh community, who have raised concerns over holding the event on a date associated with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also criticised the Congress over its performance in the MLC elections, arguing that the party had failed to make an impact despite the use of ballot papers. The BJP also accused Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of making false allegations about India’s electoral process.
Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the MLC election results had challenged the Congress’s claims about the electoral system. He asserted that the party had so far failed to win seats in the elections and had been unable to establish a significant presence.
Trivedi also pointed out that the polls were conducted using ballot boxes and ballot papers, despite the Congress’s criticism of the electoral process.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi echoed the BJP’s criticism, saying that the Congress continued to face the same electoral outcome regardless of whether ballot papers or electronic voting machines were used.
“Whether it is ballot paper or the Electronic Voting Machines, the outcome for the Congress party remains the same,” Joshi said.
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) won the Agra Teachers’ constituency in Uttar Pradesh, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) secured victory in the Patna Teachers’ constituency in the biennial elections to the Bihar Legislative Council.
