India suffered a 1-2 defeat against Honduras in the Tier C Round of 32 at the FIFA U-15 World Cup at the Hovsan Competition Complex on Wednesday.
Honduras took the lead through Danio Flores in the 18th minute and went into half-time ahead. India fought back in the second half, with Ronandev Aheibam equalising in the 31st minute, but Alejandro Amaya restored Honduras’ advantage in the 37th minute to seal the victory.
With all 189 teams continuing to compete for their final positions until the last day of the tournament, India will now move into the lower-bracket Round of 16, where they will contest positions 81 to 96.
India are scheduled to face Trinidad and Tobago later in the evening. Trinidad and Tobago entered the lower bracket after losing 2-4 to France in their Round of 32 encounter.
Both teams enjoyed spells of possession during the early stages of the match, but Honduras gradually disrupted India’s build-up play with a high press.
India created two promising opportunities in the first half through Ronandev Aheibam and Nara Meitei Loushambam. In the fourth minute, Ronandev attempted a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Nara’s free-kick from just outside the box in the 15th minute also narrowly missed the target.
Honduras broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after capitalising on a goalkeeping error. A misplaced pass from India goalkeeper Jenit Ningthoujam allowed Danio Flores to intercept the ball and finish past him to put the Central Americans ahead.
Honduras continued to put pressure on India’s defence after the restart. In the 22nd minute, Jeffrey Lara cut inside from the left and unleashed a right-footed curling effort that went over the crossbar.
India’s persistence paid off in the 31st minute when Ronandev produced a moment of individual brilliance to level the score. R. Lalremruatfela initiated the attack by finding Ronandev on the right wing. The Indian forward sent in a cross that turned into a shot, sailing into the far top corner beyond Honduras goalkeeper Santiago Borjas.
India pressed for a second goal as they looked to complete the comeback. In the 33rd minute, Lalremruatfela’s free-kick was comfortably collected by Borjas. Nibas Meetei Wahengbam then intercepted a clearance in the attacking third, but the advancing goalkeeper denied him.
Muhammad Sohil Khan also attempted a long-range effort, but his shot drifted wide of the post.
India were made to pay for their missed chances when Honduras regained the lead in the 37th minute. Josue Linares delivered a cutback from the byline, and Sohil attempted to clear the ball. However, it ricocheted off goalkeeper Jenit and fell into the path of Alejandro Amaya, who converted the loose ball into an unguarded net.
India made a final push for an equaliser in the closing seconds. Nara’s long-range attempt looked promising, but the ball struck the crossbar, leaving the Blue Colts narrowly short of forcing a draw.
