The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office, conducted an enforcement search and seizure operation on October 22 at a BIS-registered jewellery outlet in Partap Bazar, Chheharta, Amritsar, seizing 95 gold jewellery articles weighing a total of 467.44 grams for non-compliance with applicable hallmarking requirements.
During the operation, BIS officials examined gold jewellery displayed and offered for sale at the outlet. Of the 95 seized articles, 91, weighing 447.11 grams, were found bearing incomplete or non-prescribed hallmarking. The remaining four articles, with a total weight of 20.33 grams, were found without the prescribed BIS Hallmark.
The enforcement action was undertaken in the interest of consumer protection and to ensure the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery.
BIS has advised consumers to verify the prescribed hallmark and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number through the BIS CARE App before purchasing gold jewellery. The verification process can help consumers check the authenticity of hallmarking and make informed purchasing decisions.
