Playback singer Benny Dayal is set to take on the role of a judge on the upcoming singing reality show Tamil Idol, joining an eminent panel featuring Oscar-winning composer and singer A.R. Rahman, actor-singer Andrea Jeremiah and acclaimed playback singer Karthik. Rahman will serve as the show’s super judge.
Speaking about this new chapter in his musical journey, Benny said he values a singer’s individuality as much as technical ability. He added that he would look for contestants who bring their own identity and interpretation to their performances.
Known for experimenting with different musical styles, Benny said he has always enjoyed exploring new sounds rather than being confined to a particular genre.
“I’ve never liked being boxed into one style of music. From playback singing to performing with Funktuation, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting, unlearning and discovering something new. For me, a singer’s individuality is just as important as their technique, and that’s what I’ll be looking for on ‘Tamil Idol’. I’m excited to hear how these young singers interpret music in their own way, take risks and bring their personalities into their performances,” he said.
The singer added that interacting with fellow musicians offers valuable opportunities to learn and grow. He expressed particular enthusiasm about sharing the judging panel with A.R. Rahman, whose music has played a significant role in his own journey.
“So, I’m looking forward to this journey, especially alongside A.R. Rahman Sir, whose music has been such an important part of my own journey,” Benny added.
Backed by Fremantle India, Tamil Idol will be jointly hosted by Vikkals Vikram and Pooja Venkat.
The Tamil-language edition of the internationally recognised Idol franchise aims to give aspiring singers a platform to showcase their talent and develop their musical identities.
The show is scheduled to premiere this Saturday and Sunday on Sony VIZHA, with episodes also available for streaming on SonyLIV.
