Indian para-athletes delivered another impressive double podium finish at the ongoing Asian Para Games as Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Bhavikkumar Bharwad won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the men’s 400m T47 final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Thursday.
Gavit clinched gold with a time of 48.27 seconds, while Bharwad secured silver in 49.31 seconds. Japan’s Kakeru Ishida finished third, clocking 49.58 seconds to claim the bronze medal.
The victory marked Gavit’s second gold medal at the ongoing Games, following his triumph in the men’s 100m T47 event. His latest win also took India’s gold medal tally to 20 as the country’s contingent continued its strong showing in Aichi-Nagoya.
In the 100m T47 event, Gavit had secured gold with an impressive time of 10.69 seconds. Another Indian athlete, Basil, won silver in 10.72 seconds, setting a new Games record, according to the report.
Gavit had also won gold in the men’s 400m T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, where his victory helped India reach the historic milestone of 100 medals at the competition. He subsequently represented India in the men’s 400m T47 final at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Born in Toran Dongari, a small village near Nashik in Maharashtra, Gavit grew up in a modest farming family. His life changed dramatically when he suffered a fall from a tree at the age of five or six, severely injuring his right arm.
Due to a lack of timely medical treatment, the injury developed into gangrene, resulting in the amputation of his arm below the elbow. Despite the setback, Gavit pursued his passion for running and built a career in para-athletics.
He began practising on the dusty roads of his village, where his talent eventually caught the attention of coach Vaijnath Kale, who guided him towards professional para-athletics.
Gavit’s latest gold medal further underlines his determination and India’s growing success in para-athletics on the international stage.
