Mohali, October 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Mohali will host the semifinals, final and third-place match of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy on November 4 and 5, following the league stage of the tournament in Jalandhar from October 27 to November 2.
Mohali Mayor and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab leader Sarabjit Singh announced the schedule at a press conference on Wednesday, describing Punjab’s opportunity to host the international tournament as a matter of pride for the state. He credited Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s efforts for securing the event and said it would encourage greater participation in sports among young people.
Six teams — India, Bangladesh, Japan, China, Malaysia and South Korea — will compete in the tournament. Singh appealed to residents and sports enthusiasts to attend the matches in large numbers, adding that entry for spectators would be completely free.
The Mayor said the state government had earmarked around ₹25 crore to upgrade sports stadiums in line with international standards. Of this, ₹16 crore was being spent on facilities in Jalandhar, while approximately ₹8.90 crore had been allocated for stadium upgrades in Mohali.
Highlighting the government’s sports promotion initiatives, Singh said the ‘Khed Kranti’ programme had begun yielding results. According to him, the Punjab government had distributed cash awards worth around ₹135 crore among nearly 40,000 players.
He added that infrastructure development was also underway, with around 32 stadiums under construction in Mohali alone. These facilities, he said, would provide local athletes with better training opportunities and help them develop their skills.
Singh urged parents to encourage children to participate in sports alongside their studies, stressing that building a sporting culture required collective efforts from the government and society.
