Two suspected infiltrators were killed on Saturday after alert Indian Army troops foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, according to Army sources.
The encounter began around 3.30 a.m. after troops detected suspicious movement in the Jumagund area of the Keran sector. The soldiers challenged the suspected infiltrators, triggering an exchange of fire.
“Two terrorists have been killed in this operation and their bodies are lying on the other side of the LoC after they were shot and they tried to rush back into the Pakistani side,” Army sources said.
A search operation was underway in the area to check for any additional infiltrators.
The LoC runs through Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla districts in the Kashmir Valley, as well as Rajouri, Poonch and parts of Jammu district in the Jammu division. The Indian Army maintains security along the LoC through patrols and a multi-tiered anti-infiltration obstacle system designed to detect and prevent cross-border movement.
Jammu and Kashmir also shares an International Border of nearly 200 km with Pakistan, passing through Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts. The International Border is guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF).
The Army and the BSF remain deployed to prevent infiltration, smuggling and other cross-border activities, including the use of drones to deliver weapons, ammunition, cash and narcotics. Security agencies have reported that such consignments are sometimes collected by overground workers associated with militant groups and passed on for use in unlawful activities.
