Delhi Police has registered more than four FIRs against social media handles allegedly spreading misinformation and attempting to create unrest amid protests in the national capital, official sources said on Tuesday.
The cases have been registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit, with police sources alleging that misleading narratives and anti-India content were being circulated on social media platforms from across the border.
According to the sources, several Pakistani social media accounts became active during the recent protests, allegedly sharing false information to create confusion and panic among the public.
The sources claimed that on October 10, during a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, some Pakistani-linked handles circulated reports alleging that multiple people had died during the demonstrations. These claims were described as false and intended to spread panic.
Police sources also alleged that some users operating from Pakistan were using Indian names to post fake videos and misleading reports, making the content appear to originate within India.
Around 500 social media posts have been taken down so far for allegedly spreading rumours or attempting to disturb public order, the sources said. The action forms part of efforts to monitor online activity and prevent the circulation of content that could trigger tension or unrest.
The development comes amid protests by opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
On Monday, Congress-led INDIA bloc leaders marched towards the Supreme Court seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have alleged irregularities in the revision exercise, while the BJP has defended the process and accused the Congress of politicising the issue.
