Controversial anti-drug activist and former freestyle kabaddi player Parvinder Singh Jhota was allegedly shot dead by a medical store owner in Mansa on Tuesday morning following a confrontation over the suspected sale of banned drugs.
The incident was captured in a video reportedly being livestreamed by Jhota himself as he questioned the shopkeeper about the alleged sale of prohibited medicines.
According to information available, Jhota had reached the medical store accompanied by a man who claimed to have purchased the suspected drugs from the establishment earlier that morning.
Confrontation Turns Violent
During the confrontation, medical store owner Ashwani allegedly pulled out a pistol, prompting Jhota to question why he had produced a firearm.
In the video, Jhota is reportedly heard telling Ashwani that they had come only to question him about the alleged sale of drugs from his shop.
Jhota is also seen challenging the shopkeeper to fire while repeatedly asking him to put away the weapon.
However, the confrontation took a violent turn when Ashwani allegedly opened fire, leaving Jhota critically injured.
Jhota was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
One of Jhota’s associates was also reportedly injured in the incident.
Accused Reportedly Flees Scene
According to preliminary information, Ashwani allegedly chased Jhota out of the shop during the confrontation before opening fire.
The medical store owner reportedly managed to flee the scene following the shooting.
Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and began examining the circumstances surrounding the killing.
An official police statement regarding the sequence of events, the status of the accused and the legal action initiated was awaited at the time of filing this report.
Previous Dispute Reported in 2023
Sources indicated that Jhota and Ashwani had been involved in a dispute in 2023 over allegations concerning the sale of drugs.
Jhota had reportedly confronted and publicly humiliated Ashwani over the alleged sale of drugs, and a video of that confrontation had gone viral on social media. It has also been reported that Ashwani was also named in a case.
However, whether the previous dispute had any connection with Tuesday’s killing remains to be established through investigation.
Jhota, who was also known as a freestyle kabaddi player, had been actively campaigning against the sale of drugs in his area.
His anti-drug activities had frequently attracted controversy. He had reportedly been named in police cases and was also arrested in connection with a case in the past.
The circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s fatal shooting and the allegations against the medical store owner are yet to be officially detailed by police.
