Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani has said India is well positioned to lead the large-scale deployment and delivery of artificial intelligence (AI), citing the country’s experience in building and scaling technology systems for millions of people.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday, Nilekani argued that AI would not be a winner-takes-all technology, predicting that numerous players would contribute to its development and adoption.
“Everyone is saying AI is GPT, but no one can control GPTs,” he said, stressing that the technology could not be monopolised and that more computing chips would become available as the sector expands.
Nilekani said India’s experience in building large-scale technology infrastructure would prove valuable in the AI era. He also indicated that demand for technology services from companies such as Infosys was likely to grow, dismissing predictions of an inevitable decline for such firms as “disaster marketing”.
His remarks highlighted the potential for Indian IT companies to benefit from the expanding AI ecosystem, even as businesses worldwide reassess how the technology will affect traditional software and services models.
Earlier at the forum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India had chosen to use technology to empower people and contribute to global welfare.
Modi cited India’s supply of vaccines to more than 100 countries and its manufacturing capabilities as examples of the country supporting other nations. He also referred to the AI Impact Summit hosted by India, saying discussions at the event covered applications of AI for humanity as well as potential benefits for animals.
The Prime Minister said innovation opportunities were reaching a wider section of society, with new talent emerging and solutions being developed to address different needs.
Recalling the expansion of digital connectivity after 2014, Modi said the government had focused on making mobile data affordable, enabling students in smaller towns to access digital learning, village shopkeepers to reach new customers and young people to enrol in online courses.
The remarks from Nilekani and Modi underscored the growing emphasis on making AI and digital technologies accessible at scale, while positioning India as a significant participant in the next phase of technological development.
