Bengaluru Police have registered an FIR against an Andhra Pradesh-cadre IAS officer and three of his friends for allegedly assaulting and threatening a police Inspector after being asked to produce his identity card during a late-night raid at a pub.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1.30 a.m. on Friday at Kavoor pub, which falls under the jurisdiction of Cubbon Park police station. A video purportedly showing the officer and his companions abusing police personnel went viral on social media on Tuesday, bringing the incident into focus.
The officer has been identified as Vikas Marmath, Special Officer of the Kuppam Area Development Authority in Andhra Pradesh. His three friends have been identified as Abhay Uday Singh, Nitesh and Roshan.
The FIR was registered on the complaint of Inspector Arun Salunke, 38, attached to Bengaluru’s Central Crime Branch (CCB) Special Inquiry Wing. Police have invoked Sections 115(2), 351(2), 352, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, Bengaluru Police and CCB personnel were conducting inspections at pubs and other establishments to check compliance with operating hours, verify customers’ ages and identify suspicious activity.
During the inspection, uniformed police personnel asked Marmath to produce his identity card. He and his companions allegedly reacted angrily, quarrelled with the officers and used abusive language.
Police sources said Marmath allegedly slapped Inspector Salunke when the latter questioned his behaviour. He also allegedly threatened the Inspector, claiming that his position as an IAS officer meant the police could not take action against him. While the FIR records allegations of assault and threats, it does not explicitly mention slapping.
Police sources said CCTV footage of the incident was available. They also alleged that the officer and his companions were initially allowed to leave following the intervention of senior officials, raising concerns among police personnel. The FIR was subsequently registered following directions from senior officers, and further investigation is underway.
The case comes amid a wider late-night enforcement drive led by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh. Around 1,500 personnel, including 19 IPS officers, reportedly inspected 400 to 500 pubs and other establishments to check violations of closing hours, underage drinking and licensing conditions.
The inspections covered Brigade Road and other parts of the city, with police checking whether establishments stopped liquor service and closed kitchens by 1 a.m. Authorities are expected to take further action against venues found violating the prescribed rules.
