Several Muslim clerics have appealed to members of the community, particularly young people, to stay away from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying the demonstration should not be treated as a community-led initiative.
Umar Ahmed Ilyasi, head of the All India Imam Organisation, made the appeal on Friday, urging Muslims and mosque imams not to participate in the proposed October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar. He alleged that political parties had repeatedly used the Muslim community for their own purposes without delivering meaningful benefits in return.
In a video appeal, Ilyasi also expressed concern about the prevailing atmosphere in the country and warned against activities that could disturb peace and social harmony. He urged Muslims across the country, especially religious leaders, to exercise caution before joining the demonstration.
Maulana Chaudhary Ifraheem Husain supported Ilyasi’s appeal, saying people should avoid programmes or demonstrations that could disrupt communal brotherhood, peace and public order.
Meanwhile, All India Muslim Jamaat national president Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi said holding a peaceful sit-in was a legal right but cautioned against violence during protests.
Razvi specifically appealed to Muslim youth in Delhi and districts of Uttar Pradesh to stay away from the CJP’s proposed gathering at Jantar Mantar. He cited alleged violent incidents during the party’s recent protests and said some Muslim participants had subsequently faced difficulties.
The clerics’ statements come ahead of the planned demonstration against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, they stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and avoiding participation in demonstrations that could lead to violence or disrupt communal harmony.
