An FIR has been registered after an allegedly fake and digitally manipulated image of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was circulated on social media, the Assam Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on Monday.
The CMO said the image was artificially generated and had no connection with reality, alleging that it was deliberately created and circulated to mislead the public and tarnish the Chief Minister’s image.
“The Chief Minister’s Office, Assam has taken serious note of the deliberate circulation of a completely FAKE and morphed image of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr @himantabiswa on social media. The image, created using Artificial Intelligence, is entirely fabricated and has no basis in reality whatsoever,” the office said in a statement.
According to the CMO, individuals allegedly involved in creating and disseminating the fabricated content have been identified, and legal proceedings have been initiated against those responsible.
The office warned that creating and circulating manipulated digital material through social media could have serious consequences, particularly when such content is intended to create a false impression among the public.
The CMO said strict legal action would be taken against all persons found to be involved in the alleged campaign.
It also urged social media users to exercise caution and verify information before sharing or reposting content concerning the Chief Minister or the state government.
The office specifically appealed to those who may have already circulated the image to check its authenticity and refrain from further dissemination.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence and digital manipulation to create misleading images and information involving public figures. The CMO said such fabricated material could create confusion and influence public perception without any factual basis.
Authorities are continuing legal proceedings in the case, with the CMO reiterating that action would be taken against those found responsible for creating and circulating the allegedly fabricated image.
