Debris from a medical transport aircraft carrying six people has been found off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, as the US Coast Guard continues search-and-rescue operations for those onboard. The aircraft had lost contact while flying from Bermuda to Boston, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alerted the Coast Guard at around 2 a.m. on Saturday after losing contact with the Gulfstream G100, registered as C-GRJP. The aircraft was operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, a Canadian medical evacuation company.
The Coast Guard confirmed that the debris field located by search crews was associated with the missing aircraft. Four Canadian nationals and two Bermudian nationals were onboard, and their next of kin have been notified.
“Crews are continuing to search for the six people who were aboard the aircraft, and the Coast Guard cutter William Sparling will continue search efforts throughout the night,” the Coast Guard said in an update.
Flight-tracking data from FlightAware indicated that the aircraft had dropped sharply in altitude, from approximately 7,300 metres (24,000 feet) to 3,300 metres (11,000 feet), before communications were lost.
According to air traffic control audio posted by LiveATC.net, the pilot reported electrical problems and declared an emergency as the aircraft approached the coast. A controller was heard asking whether the pilot was “coming in blind” and confirming the emergency declaration, although the pilot’s response was inaudible.
Canadian Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said authorities were closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant agencies as search efforts continued.
In a post on X, MacKinnon expressed concern for those onboard and their families, and thanked first responders for their ongoing efforts.
