Slovakia School Knife Attack Leaves Teacher Dead, Two Injured; 13-Year-Old Suspect Detained

A 61-year-old teacher was killed and two others, including a teacher and a student, were injured after a 13-year-old student allegedly carried out a knife attack at an elementary school in Slovakia’s Cadca district on Tuesday, local media reported.

The attack took place at a primary school in the village of Staskov after the first lesson. According to Slovakia-based media outlet Koktejl, an eighth-grade student attacked another student with a knife, leaving a 61-year-old teacher dead and a teacher and a student injured.

The injured teacher is out of danger, while the student is in critical condition and fighting for her life, the report said.

Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said the suspect had been detained and that the case was being handled by the Office for Combating Organised Crime of the Presidium of the Police Force, Koktejl reported.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Slovak police confirmed that the suspect was a 13-year-old elementary school student and said the specialised police office had taken over the investigation.

“Members of the Police Force from several units are on site, the situation is under control and there is no further danger,” the police said, adding that investigative procedures were underway. They said further details could not be disclosed at that stage to avoid disrupting the investigation.

Police urged the public and media to rely only on verified information and refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports.

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico said he was following developments at the school with great concern and that the relevant ministers were on their way to the scene.

“Schools must be safe places for our children; otherwise, we will have no future,” Fico said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Expressing condolences to the victim’s family, Fico said he was deeply saddened by the incident and wished the injured a speedy recovery and strength. He added that the government would continue to monitor the situation closely and was prepared to provide all necessary assistance.
