Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday criticised the BJP government over its response to concerns about women’s safety in Delhi, accusing it of advising female students to stay indoors in the evening instead of strengthening security arrangements.
In a video message, Kejriwal said students from several women’s colleges had taken to the streets following the Astha Kunj rape case, demanding better security. He alleged that the government had responded by advising girls not to step out of their homes after 7 p.m., rather than addressing their safety concerns.
“After the Astha Kunj rape case, Delhi’s female students are extremely angry. Students from several women’s colleges are out on the streets, demanding safety. The government added insult to injury by lecturing them online. The government has told girls to stop stepping out of their homes in the evening and at night. Why are all the restrictions imposed only on girls?” Kejriwal said.
He accused the government of failing to fulfil its responsibility to ensure public safety and said women’s freedom should not be restricted because of security concerns.
“The government has failed to do its job. If the government is incompetent, does that mean it will impose restrictions on women? The government should provide security and install CCTV cameras,” he said.
Kejriwal called for expanding CCTV surveillance across Delhi, introducing real-time monitoring and installing street lights in poorly illuminated areas. He said these measures could help women feel safer in public spaces.
Recalling the security infrastructure installed during the AAP government’s tenure, Kejriwal said 2.62 lakh CCTV cameras and 2.80 lakh street lights had been installed in the city. He claimed that more than half of these were now non-functional and called for them to be restored.
He also proposed deploying two female police officers inside every college to strengthen the security of students.
Kejriwal further accused the BJP of protecting individuals who are accused of rape or harassment after they join the party. He alleged that such actions sent a message that those accused of harassing women could avoid consequences through political affiliation.
Emphasising women’s rights, the AAP leader said female students should not be told to remain indoors after 7 p.m. and that ensuring their safety was the government’s responsibility.
“Today, we have to ensure the safety of our female students. Stop lecturing women that they should not step out of their homes after 7 pm. They are also independent citizens of this country and have fundamental rights. They are human beings too. They have the right to live and the right to freedom,” he said.
Kejriwal called for women to have the freedom to move without restrictions and urged the government to focus on providing effective security measures across the national capital.
