An Assam Rifles havildar was killed and four other personnel injured after suspected heavily armed militants ambushed a patrol party near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday, officials said.
The attack took place near Nampong Nallah, under Nampong circle, when a patrol party of the 21 Assam Rifles was conducting operations in an area where border fencing work is underway. Changlang district shares an unfenced stretch of the international boundary with Myanmar.
A police official in Itanagar said preliminary reports indicated that the suspected militants opened fire on the patrol party, killing the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) on the spot and injuring four other personnel.
The deceased havildar was identified by the Assam Rifles as Jangkhokai Kuki, 42. The injured personnel were shifted to a hospital for treatment, while details about their condition were awaited.
Following the ambush, additional security forces were rushed to the area, and a massive operation was launched to track down and apprehend the militants who fled the scene.
There were reports suggesting the involvement of militants belonging to the NSCN-K-YA faction, but the claim had not been officially confirmed.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said he had directed the officer-in-charge of Changlang police station to gather further information about the incident. Further details were awaited.
The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district has remained sensitive due to the movement of several banned insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.
Assam Rifles Director General Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera condemned the attack and paid tribute to the slain havildar, while expressing condolences to his family.
