Assam Police have launched a search for a man who was reportedly present with Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria and the prime accused, Ashik Ali, at a Guwahati homestay on the night of her death, as investigators seek to establish the sequence of events leading to the incident.
The missing man, identified as Rupam Saikia, a resident of Baihata Chariali, had allegedly consumed alcohol with Thakuria and Ali at the homestay. Police are examining his movements and whereabouts as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to officials, Saikia returned home at around 10 p.m. on the night of the incident. He subsequently travelled to Mirza after learning about the death of a family member and returned the following morning.
Saikia reportedly remained at his residence during the day before leaving on his motorcycle for Adabari in the evening. His family was unable to contact him after he left, prompting his mother to lodge a missing person complaint at Jalukbari Police Station.
Police traced the last known location of Saikia’s mobile phone to a field behind a company in the Rampur area. The phone has remained switched off since then. Investigators are attempting to establish whether his disappearance is connected to the circumstances surrounding Thakuria’s death.
Meanwhile, police have taken another Baihata Chariali resident, Nitu Ali, into custody for questioning. He allegedly supplied alcohol to Ashik Ali and Thakuria at the homestay.
The prime accused, Ashik Ali, has been remanded to eight days of police custody. Investigators are examining the activities of everyone present at the property, the events preceding Thakuria’s loss of consciousness and the circumstances that led to her death.
Thakuria was found unconscious at a homestay in the Garal locality of Guwahati and was subsequently taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Police said that she and Ashik Ali had visited the property several times before the incident.
Saikia’s disappearance has added another dimension to the investigation, with police continuing efforts to trace his whereabouts and reconstruct the events of the night.
