The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday quashed a case related to a 2024 West Bengal Police raid at the rented residence of Suvendu Adhikari, who was then the Leader of the Opposition, in Kolaghat, East Midnapore district, during the Lok Sabha elections.
The controversy dates back to May 2024, when police raided Adhikari’s rented house in Kolaghat, claiming that the operation was aimed at arresting a wanted criminal. Adhikari, however, alleged that the raid was intended to harass him during the election campaign.
The matter subsequently reached the Calcutta High Court, where the police initially maintained that the search had been conducted to apprehend the wanted individual. However, in a report submitted to the court, the police stated that nothing suspicious had been found at the residence. A blank seizure list was prepared, and the investigation did not progress further.
Adhikari was not present at the house when the raid took place, as he was attending a political programme elsewhere. He alleged that around 80 police personnel had participated in the operation.
The raid triggered protests by local BJP leaders and supporters, who confronted the police at the site and exchanged heated words with personnel. After learning about the incident, Adhikari reached Kolaghat Police Station, where he reportedly had an altercation with police personnel on duty. He also complained that no senior officer was present when he arrived.
Adhikari accused the police of failing to follow established protocols for raids and search operations. He also alleged political involvement in the action, indirectly accusing Trinamool Congress general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee of being behind the operation.
Adhikari later approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging that personnel from the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), which was working as the Trinamool Congress’s election strategist, had accompanied police personnel during the raid.
After hearing the matter and examining the submissions, the Calcutta High Court quashed the case on Tuesday, bringing the legal proceedings related to the incident to a close.
