Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday paid tribute to Sri Guru Amar Das, the third Guru of Sikhism, on the occasion of his Jyoti Jyot Diwas, recalling his teachings on equality, humility, service and social harmony.
Amit Shah, in a post on X, said Guru Amar Das taught that love, equality and humility were the true path of devotion.
“On the Jyoti Jyot Diwas of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Guru of Sikhism, who taught that love, equality, and humility are the true path of devotion, millions of salutations,” Shah said.
He said Guru Amar Das inspired humanity to give up ego and embrace the path of service and dedication, while conveying the message of social unity.
“Guru Sahib’s divine life and his lofty ideals will forever remain a source of inspiration for all humankind,” Shah added.
Yogi Adityanath also paid his respects to Guru Amar Das, describing him as a great saint and messenger of humanity, service, harmony and spiritual consciousness.
He said the Guru’s message aimed at eradicating social evils continued to inspire humanity and that his life would continue to illuminate the path of public welfare.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tribute to Guru Amar Das on the occasion, describing his life as a symbol of service, equality, compassion, human dignity and social reform.
Birla said Guru Amar Das, through his spiritual contemplation and active life, advanced the vision of a society free from caste-based distinctions, notions of high and low, and social discrimination.
Guru Amar Das, also known as Guru Amardas, was the third Guru of Sikhism and became Guru on March 26, 1552, at the age of 73.
According to the source, before becoming a Sikh, Guru Amar Das was on a pilgrimage in search of a spiritual guide when he heard his nephew’s wife, Bibi Amro, reciting a hymn by Guru Nanak. He was deeply moved by the hymn and subsequently came into contact with the Sikh faith.
