The detention of US citizen and Myanmar scholar Min Zin in China has raised concerns over the potential impact on international academic research, particularly studies involving China, amid growing scrutiny of his case.
The US State Department on August 20 designated Min Zin as “wrongfully detained” following a review of his detention in Yunnan on June 3. The department said he had travelled to China at the invitation of the Chinese government to attend an academic conference.
According to a report by Myanmar-based media outlet The Irrawaddy, Min Zin had entered China with a valid multiple-entry visa and a US passport, expecting to attend an academic workshop in Yunnan. The report said he was detained on arrival and subjected to repeated interrogations.
Chinese authorities have disputed the US characterisation of the detention. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Min Zin was suspected of espionage and activities endangering China’s national security, and maintained that the case was being handled in accordance with Chinese law.
The case has also prompted discussion about the risks faced by scholars conducting research involving China. The report argued that international and area studies depend heavily on access, which governments can restrict, potentially making researchers more cautious about undertaking critical work or speaking publicly about sensitive cases.
Min Zin, who heads the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar, has researched Myanmar-China relations and Chinese foreign policy. He is also a UC Berkeley scholar.
The report said Min Zin’s wife, Sylvia Zin, recently testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee, describing the wider implications of his detention and what she characterised as repression extending beyond China’s borders.
It also drew parallels with the case of a Japanese history professor arrested in Beijing in 2019, arguing that the detention of scholars could have a broader chilling effect on international academic exchanges and research.
The US administration has said the safety and security of American citizens is a priority and has called for the release of Americans it considers wrongfully detained or subject to exit bans in China.
The report further raised questions over what measures Washington should take to protect American researchers working on China-related subjects and preserve open-source academic research.
