Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned India at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday that any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan’s share of Indus waters would be treated as an “act of war”.
“India, India, India must make no mistake about it,” Sharif said while addressing the 81st session of the General Assembly.
His remarks came after India placed the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people. India has linked the move to the attack and its broader security concerns, while Pakistan has rejected the decision and disputed its legal basis.
Sharif also again raised the Kashmir issue at the UN, saying that Kashmiri people were waiting for the United Nations to fulfil what he described as its commitment to a “free and impartial plebiscite” under UN auspices.
He described Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein” and accused India of human rights violations in the region.
Sharif also criticised what he described as Islamophobia in India and highlighted Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir dispute. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has consistently maintained that Kashmir remains an unresolved dispute and has called for a UN-supervised plebiscite.
The Pakistani prime minister also praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, crediting the military leadership for Pakistan’s response during the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict and for diplomatic efforts relating to the wider Middle East crisis.
On reform of the UN Security Council, Sharif said the body needed to become more representative but argued against reforms that, in his view, would serve “the ambitions of a select few”.
The speech came amid continued diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan over the Indus Waters Treaty and Kashmir. Pakistan has repeatedly warned against any alteration of the flow of waters covered by the treaty, while India maintains that the treaty was placed in abeyance following the Pahalgam attack.
