The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for action against him over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing a recent report on objections reportedly raised within the Election Commission.
Senior AAP leader and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia described Kumar as a “murderer of democracy” and alleged that he had betrayed voters and the country. Sisodia also alleged that Kumar had compromised the legacy of leaders who fought for the right to vote.
The AAP leader said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections 14 times over issues relating to the addition and deletion of voters and control of electoral rolls. The Indian Express has reported that the two commissioners formally objected at least 14 times over the past 10 months to decisions and orders concerning the SIR exercise.
“If Gyanesh Kumar is so devoted to the BJP, he should resign as Chief Election Commissioner, join the election cell of the BJP and Narendra Modi, and become its chief,” Sisodia said.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the SIR exercise was being conducted at the behest of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the reported objections within the poll panel, Singh said the concerns raised by the two Election Commissioners were similar to those previously voiced by the Opposition.
Singh claimed that 27 lakh voters had been deleted in West Bengal and alleged that voter deletions had also taken place in Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and Bihar. He demanded that elections in constituencies where such irregularities were established be cancelled and held again.
On Delhi, Singh alleged that 47 lakh voters had been removed from the draft electoral roll and questioned whether “every third voter in Delhi” was fake. The figure of more than 47 lakh names missing from Delhi’s draft electoral roll has also been reported in connection with the SIR exercise. The Election Commission’s process and the reasons for the exclusions have become the subject of a political and legal dispute.
Singh also alleged that notices had been issued to several prominent individuals, including former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani, former Union minister Kapil Sibal, a former Army chief, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his family, as well as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, the External Affairs Minister and the Foreign Secretary.
AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the SIR process in Delhi involved “blatant irregularities” and demanded that the entire Opposition unite to protest. He also called for Kumar’s removal and legal action against him.
AAP Gujarat in-charge and former Delhi minister Gopal Rai alleged that the Election Commission’s impartiality had been compromised under Kumar’s leadership and demanded cancellation of elections where he alleged irregularities had occurred.
AAP national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda, in a post on X, alleged that the reported developments showed Kumar was acting as a “puppet of the BJP” and demanded his resignation or removal.
The political allegations came after a report by The Indian Express said Sandhu and Joshi had formally objected multiple times to decisions concerning electoral-roll revision. However, Election Commission sources have rejected claims of a “one-man” functioning of the poll panel, maintaining that decisions, including those relating to SIR, were taken unanimously with the approval of all three commissioners.
