Regular classes have resumed at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay days after the death of second-year student Sahil Ravindra Wakode triggered protests on the Powai campus.
According to official sources, no major protest was underway at the campus on Wednesday. A small group of around a dozen Humanities students and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) members were reportedly sitting outside the institute.
IIT Bombay has more than 12,000 students and over 700 faculty members on campus.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police said the investigation into Wakode’s death was being conducted impartially and that all possible angles were being examined. The police also appealed to the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information.
Police said a case initially registered at Powai Police Station following Wakode’s death was transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch as DCB CID C.R. No. 124/2026. The investigation has been entrusted to an Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officer and is being supervised by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Detection-I, Crime Branch.
IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who has been named in connection with the case, has been sent on leave amid the ongoing investigation, sources said.
Wakode’s parents had earlier demanded Doolla’s immediate arrest. A case has been registered against the professor on allegations including abetment to suicide and caste-based discrimination. The allegations remain subject to investigation.
Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found hanging in his hostel room on the Powai campus on the evening of September 18. The incident occurred hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination.
Mumbai Police has urged people to rely only on information released through official channels and refrain from drawing premature conclusions as the investigation continues.
