Actress Fatima Sana Shaikh, who will next be seen in the crime drama series Hunkkaar: The Roar, has spoken about her views on feminism, saying she finds it surprising that some actresses choose not to identify themselves as feminists.
Fatima, who plays a determined police officer in the JioHotstar series, said feminism is often misunderstood and treated as a negative term.
“Feminism is treated like a bad word by a lot of people. It’s shocking that there are actresses who say they aren’t feminists. By being a feminist, I’m not snatching away a man’s rights. I’m just asking for equal rights for myself,” she said in a statement.
She cited actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas as an example of someone who openly identifies as a feminist while maintaining a wide audience.
“Priyanka Chopra calls herself a feminist and has a huge male fan base. If your intention is clear and you aren’t dumb about it, people will listen to you,” Fatima said.
In Hunkkaar: The Roar, Fatima plays a no-nonsense police officer investigating a case in which a minor, portrayed by Aneet Padda, accuses a spiritual guru of sexual assault.
Describing the project as one of the most enriching experiences of her career, Fatima said she particularly valued being treated as an equal by the makers.
The series is produced by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment in association with Purple Pebble Pictures and Mangata Films. It is directed by Karan D. Kapadia and Nitya Mehra.
The crime drama also stars Aneet Padda as an assault survivor, with the story centred on her character’s fight for truth and justice. Fatima’s character investigates the case and takes on those accused of wielding power and influence.
Hunkkaar: The Roar is scheduled to begin streaming on JioHotstar from September 25.
