Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India’s per capita carbon emissions are less than half the global average, asserting that the country has been firmly highlighting this fact at international forums while advocating collective action on climate change.
Modi made the remarks while inaugurating the international conference on ‘The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics’ in New Delhi. He also launched the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Mobile App during the event.
The two-day conference, organised by the NGT, brings together eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries to deliberate on key environmental challenges, including gaps in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement. The discussions will also focus on strengthening environmental governance and institutional cooperation.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said India’s civilisational traditions had long emphasised harmony with nature and that the country was drawing on this heritage while developing responses to contemporary climate challenges.
“On the subject of nature and the environment, for centuries, India has, in a sense, guided the world. Carrying forward that ideological commitment and drawing upon our rich cultural experiences as a foundation, India is now providing solutions to modern climate challenges,” he said.
Modi said developing countries had been unfairly burdened with responsibility for global carbon emissions, while pointing to what he described as the historical disparity in per capita emissions.
“The responsibility for carbon emissions has been wrongly placed on developing countries, whereas the historical truth is that India’s contribution to per capita carbon emissions is less than half the global average,” he said.
He further claimed that per capita carbon emissions in developed countries are six times higher than India’s, saying the country has been presenting this comparison on global platforms.
Modi also highlighted India’s efforts to showcase its traditional environmental practices internationally. Referring to the 2015 COP21 climate conference in Paris, he said India had presented its traditions and their strengths to the world through initiatives centred on environmental protection and sustainable development.
“By taking the world along with us, we are establishing new benchmarks for environmental protection,” the Prime Minister said.
The conference is aimed at facilitating international dialogue on environmental law, climate challenges and judicial approaches to strengthening environmental governance.
