Gurugram hit-and-run victim Shivani Chauhan, popularly known as Sia, has said the case became a “national issue” because people across the country could relate to the circumstances surrounding it.
Speaking about the public support she has received, Sia said the incident resonated with people who had either experienced similar situations themselves or knew someone who had.
“Everyone has supported this cause because everyone has related to this issue. Somewhere or another, some female biker, some girl in some way, or any ordinary person has experienced a similar incident happening to them at some point in their life,” she said.
Sia said the issue was about more than her individual case and argued that those responsible for such incidents should face legal consequences.
She said people had begun to believe they could act “above the law” and claimed that the accused in her case appeared to believe they could escape the charges against them.
According to Sia, if a person feels they are above the law, it raises questions about whether the legal system is adequately holding offenders accountable.
She also criticised what she described as attempts by the accused to influence public perception through social media.
“They feel that by posting some videos, they can change the narrative. They can shift the blame and gain sympathy,” she said, calling for strict action and stressing that she did not consider her case an isolated incident.
Sia said she was raising her voice not only for herself but also for others who may have faced similar circumstances, regardless of gender.
“I believe justice should prevail, and it should set precedence for another such incident,” she said.
Meanwhile, a Gurugram court on Friday sent Kalyan Bainsla, the accused driver, and his cousin Lavneesh to 14 days of judicial custody. Both are scheduled to be produced before the court again after the completion of the remand period.
