India’s 15-year-old shooter Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar clinched the gold medal in the Trap Men Junior event at the ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun in Porpetto, Italy, on Friday.
Yugan produced a composed performance in a closely fought final, hitting 27 targets to finish one hit ahead of Italy’s Francesco Tanfoglio, who took silver with 26 hits. Another Italian, Simone Roncen, secured the bronze medal with 21 targets.
The Indian shooter had earlier shown strong temperament to qualify for the medal round. He registered 114 hits across five qualification rounds, recording scores of 22, 22, 24, 23 and 23 to finish tied for sixth place.
Yugan then prevailed in the shoot-off for the final qualification spot, defeating Spain’s Eduard Salichs 2-1 to enter the medal round.
Starting the final from sixth position, Yugan maintained his composure through the elimination stages and remained consistent as the field narrowed. He produced crucial hits in the closing stages to move ahead of his rivals and secure India’s first medal of the competition.
Spain’s Jose Barrero finished fourth with 15 hits, while Italy’s Andrea Diana, who had topped the qualification standings with a score of 120, finished fifth with 11 targets.
Yugan’s victory gave India a strong start at the junior shotgun competition and underlined the teenager’s ability to perform under pressure on the international stage.
