Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, who has been receiving positive response for his recently released streaming series ‘The Revolutionaries’, has revealed that history remains his strongest area of interest and a major source of inspiration for his creative work.
Speaking to IANS alongside actors Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Gurfateh Parizada, Advani discussed the books, music and other influences that shape his creative pursuits.
His body of work reflects a strong interest in historical narratives, with projects such as ‘Rocket Boys’, ‘Freedom at Midnight’ and ‘The Empire’ exploring different periods and themes rooted in history. ‘The Revolutionaries’ is his latest work in the genre.
“I just read a lot of history. I devour it, I inhale it. I don’t like reading too much fiction. I listen to a lot of podcasts. I keep listening to music more and more,” Advani told IANS.
The filmmaker also spoke about his evolving musical preferences and his shared listening experience with his 20-year-old daughter.
“For a long time I was listening to her music. Now she’s understood that my music is better than her music,” he said, listing artists ranging from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar and Mohammed Rafi to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay.
Advani said his current professional routine revolves heavily around scripts and the editing process.
“Now I find myself just reading scripts. I’m reading scripts all the time. I’m sending notes all the time. I’m sending edit notes all the time,” he said.
He added that he and his team had developed an understanding of what works for them creatively, but suggested that he may eventually seek to break away from that formula.
“We have found what works for us, which possibly makes me think that now maybe I have to flip everything again and surprise everybody,” he said.
‘The Revolutionaries’ follows four freedom fighters — Rash Behari Bose, Pratibha Lahiri, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Bagha Jatin — and their confrontation with the British Raj. Inspired by true events, the series is set against the backdrop of India’s freedom struggle.
The show stars Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta, Gurfateh Pirzada and Jason Shah. It explores the lives of revolutionaries who believed that armed resistance was vital to ending British rule in India.
