The Delhi BJP will stage a protest on Saturday outside the office of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Vijay Kumar in Trilokpuri, demanding his resignation over allegations of financial exploitation and abetment of suicide in connection with the death of an MCD sanitation worker.
The protest will be led by the BJP Mahila Morcha, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said. He alleged that despite an FIR being registered against the councillor, the AAP leadership had not taken action against him.
Police registered a case against Vijay Kumar on September 14 under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment of suicide) following a complaint related to the death of sanitation worker Deepak. Kumar has denied the allegations and said he was being falsely implicated.
Kapoor alleged that AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Convenor Saurabh Bharadwaj were shielding the councillor. He said the BJP would hold another protest outside the AAP office on Ferozeshah Road on Sunday if Kumar did not resign and the party failed to take action.
He also demanded an impartial investigation into the allegations and said the AAP leadership would have to clarify whether it stood with its councillor or supported an independent probe into the death and the circumstances faced by the worker’s family.
According to allegations raised by Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, Deepak had worked as an MCD sanitation worker in the Trilokpuri ward for several years and wanted to buy a house for his family.
Malhotra alleged that about a year ago, Kumar helped arrange a Rs 15 lakh loan for Deepak, but the loan amount was transferred to an account allegedly controlled by the councillor. He further alleged that Kumar took possession of Deepak’s signed cheque book and that money equivalent to the worker’s salary was withdrawn using the cheques over several months.
The allegations also include a demand for a 25 per cent commission, or Rs 25,000 for every Rs 1 lakh, when Deepak sought either the house or return of his money. His family has alleged that he was also threatened with a transfer and that important documents, including his cheque book and bank papers, were in the councillor’s possession.
Police are investigating the allegations, including the financial transactions and circumstances surrounding Deepak’s death. The allegations against Kumar have not been established in court.
