Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Pakistan’s 21-year-old fast bowler Razaullah for providing pace and a point of difference during the opening day of the third Test against England at Edgbaston.
The debutant claimed two wickets as Pakistan endured a difficult day, but his spell offered encouragement for a side searching for greater variety in its pace attack.
“Pakistan have been calling out for something different from their bowlers for a long while,” Hussain told Sky Sports.
Razaullah was one of seven additions to Pakistan’s squad following their heavy defeat at Lord’s. Despite having only eight first-class appearances before his Test debut, the right-arm pacer made an immediate impression by generating speed and bounce.
“It is nice to watch that spell from Razaullah that had something, that had a point of difference, had some pace,” Hussain said.
His most significant breakthrough came when he dismissed Joe Root, England’s captain and one of the most accomplished batters of his generation. Razaullah also removed opener Emilio Gay as England reached 156/4 at stumps after Pakistan were bowled out for 133.
“It hurried one of the greatest batters there has ever been in Joe Root, and got him out,” Hussain said.
Razaullah’s spell came after England’s pace attack had dismantled Pakistan’s batting. Josh Tongue was the pick of the hosts’ bowlers with four wickets, while England’s other fast bowlers also made early inroads.
Tongue said England were in a strong position after restricting Pakistan to 133 and taking four wickets by the close.
“Really pleased with the day. Coming here this morning, winning the toss, putting Pakistan in to bat, bowling them out for 130-odd – we’re in a really strong position,” he said.
With England holding the advantage at stumps, Razaullah’s debut nevertheless provided Pakistan with a promising glimpse of the pace and bounce they have been seeking. His ability to hurry batters and extract bounce emerged as the most encouraging aspect of an otherwise challenging opening day for the visitors.
