The Embassy of India in Beijing on Monday asked families of Indian nationals who remain missing following the devastating mudslide and flash floods in China on August 26 to submit DNA samples to assist authorities in identifying those missing.
The Embassy said Chinese authorities have confirmed that they are now able to receive DNA samples for Indian nationals listed as missing after the disaster.
“Following confirmation from authorities in the People’s Republic of China that they are now able to receive DNA samples for Indian nationals listed as missing following the devastating mudslide and flash flood of August 26, the Embassy of India in Beijing requests the families of Indian nationals who remain missing, to submit DNA samples to assist in the identification process,” the Embassy said.
Families have been asked to provide the relevant DNA data in the internationally recognised CODIS format to the Embassy of India. The Embassy will forward the information to the concerned Chinese authorities for comparison.
It said families would be informed if a confirmed DNA match is established.
The advisory follows an earlier announcement by the Embassy on August 30 that authorities in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) had established two dedicated 24-hour English-language hotlines to assist families seeking information about missing foreign nationals following flash floods and mudslides in the region.

The disaster caused widespread destruction across parts of Tibet and neighbouring Nepal. Catastrophic flash floods and mudslides, triggered by the collapse of a Himalayan glacier, severely affected areas along the China-Nepal border.
The Embassy’s latest request for DNA samples is aimed at facilitating the identification of Indian nationals who are still unaccounted for following the disaster.
