The political blame game intensified on Monday over the deadly Satya Niketan building collapse, with the Congress alleging that the incident was a case of “planned murder”, while the BJP accused Opposition parties of politicising the tragedy as rescue operations continued.
At least six people have died in the collapse, while five others have been rescued. Search and rescue teams continued efforts to locate people feared trapped under the debris.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari criticised the authorities and questioned whether adequate action was being taken against those responsible. He alleged that construction and repair work was allowed to continue while students were staying in the building as paying guests.
“Do not call it an accident; this was a planned murder. It was a killing,” Tiwari told IANS, alleging that the building was an old structure with a weak foundation and that additional construction had been carried out without adequate structural safeguards.
He also questioned why the FIR had primarily named the landlord and alleged that the Municipal Corporation and other agencies responsible for oversight should also face scrutiny.
BJP MLA Anil Sharma, meanwhile, accused the AAP and other Opposition parties of focusing on politics while the government was engaged in rescue operations.
Sharma said the building was around 40 to 50 years old and claimed that repair work being carried out at the premises led to the collapse after required norms were allegedly not followed.
He said those responsible would face criminal action and added that MCD officials and engineers could also be suspended if they were found to have failed in their duties.
Sharma said any building found to be dilapidated or structurally unsafe would be sealed and subsequently demolished. He also rejected claims that the Satya Niketan building had previously been sealed, saying the structure was undergoing repair work when the incident occurred.
The BJP MLA assured that strict action would be taken against all persons found responsible for putting lives at risk.
