Iva Jovic reached the US Open fourth round for the first time after overcoming Alexandra Eala in a thrilling three-set battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 18-year-old American prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 after more than three hours, overcoming an early setback in the deciding set before producing a series of aggressive shots and winning key points in extended rallies.
Eala broke in the opening game of the third set to take a 2-0 lead, but Jovic immediately hit back. The American recovered another break to move 4-2 ahead, only for Eala to fight back and level the set at 4-4.
Jovic regained the lead with a running forehand volley and moved within one game of victory. Eala saved a match point and held serve to make it 5-5, but Jovic responded with an ace to take the lead again before sealing the win when Eala sent a forehand into the net.
Jovic struck 44 winners and converted nine of 17 break-point opportunities. She was also highly effective at the net, winning 12 of 15 points there. Eala produced 34 winners and won 16 of 25 points when moving forward, but could not prevail in the decisive moments.
Jovic will next face Coco Gauff in the fourth round.
Earlier, sixth-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated No. 25 seed Marie Bouzkova 7-6(3), 7-6(3) in two hours and 27 minutes to reach the fourth round for a sixth consecutive year.
Swiatek saved three set points when Bouzkova served for the second set at 6-5 and then dominated the ensuing tiebreak. Despite being broken five times and winning 60 per cent of her first-serve points, the Pole struck 35 winners and won 15 of 17 points at the net.
Swiatek will next meet Zheng Qinwen, against whom she has a 7-1 head-to-head record.
