Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the luxury vehicle manufacturer owned by Tata Motors, is preparing to cut up to 4,000 jobs in the UK over the next two years amid rising costs, weaker demand and the impact of US import tariffs, according to a report in The Times.
The company is expected to formally announce a redundancy programme on Monday after informing employees on Friday that job reductions were imminent, the report said.
JLR employs around 34,000 people in the UK, with operations in the West Midlands and Halewood in Merseyside. Its domestic supply chain is estimated to support another 120,000 jobs.
The proposed workforce reduction comes as CEO PB Balaji, who took charge last year after serving as Tata Motors’ finance chief, seeks to improve profitability and reduce costs. According to the report, Tata Motors has increased pressure on JLR’s management following a deterioration in the automaker’s financial performance.
JLR’s revenue fell by nearly 10 per cent in the quarter ended June 2026, while pre-tax profit dropped by more than two-thirds to £109 million.
The company is targeting around £1.7 billion in savings over the next two years and aims to reduce its annual break-even point to 300,000 vehicles.
In a statement cited by the report, JLR said it needed to adapt to changing global market conditions by simplifying its organisation, improving efficiency and strengthening resilience.
The automaker has opened a voluntary redundancy programme for salaried and management employees and said further details would be provided to staff.
JLR is also facing the impact of a 10 per cent US tariff on British car imports. North America accounts for 29 per cent of its global sales and remains its largest market.
The company was additionally hit by a cyberattack last year that disrupted its operations for several months, adding to the challenges facing the automaker.
