Singer Katy Perry has paid an emotional tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton, remembering her as a woman who challenged stereotypes for decades and inspired generations with her talent, humour and kindness.
Perry took to Instagram to share a series of memories with Parton following the singer’s death at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
“Like the rest of the world, my heart sank seeing the news of dear Dolly’s passing. She meant so much to so many people for so long. For me, she was an example of a woman who defied the stereotypes for decades. She proved that big b***s, big brains, and a big voice can all exist in one tiny body! But the biggest thing about her by far was her heart,” Perry wrote.
The Roar hitmaker recalled having the honour of meeting and performing with Parton on several occasions. She described the country legend as a joyful and spirited person whose humorous approach to life remained an inspiration.
Perry also recalled a dream of having Parton join her during her Super Bowl performance, emerging from an oversized rhinestone cowboy boot. Although Parton could not participate at the time, Perry said she sent her team a handwritten note by fax in 2015.
“If there’s someone you wanna look up to and model your life after, it’s Dolly,” Perry wrote, praising Parton for being glamorous, funny and kind. She added that Parton’s star would “forever shine bright” and ended her tribute by saying, “We will always love you Dolly!”
Parton died on Tuesday at 80. Her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also served as her head of security, announced her death in an Instagram video. She had been battling cancer for a brief period.
