Composer and singer Anu Malik showered praise on veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu for his soulful rendition of “Sambhala Hai Maine” from the film Naaraaz during an appearance on the reality show India’s Best Dancer Season 5.
Recalling the song, Malik said Sanu’s voice elevated the composition and gave it an emotional depth that remained special to him.
Admitting that he had rarely praised Sanu so openly, Malik said on the show, “Iss manch ke zariye Sanu ke baare mein kuch kehna chahta hoon. Kabhi maine itni tareef nahi ki hain. Iss gaane mein 100 chand laga diye Sanu ji ne apni awaaz se. Main zindagi bhar aabhaari rahunga aise singers ka, jismein se ek Sanu hain, jinhone gaane ko dil se lagaya hain.”
Malik’s remarks reflected his appreciation for singers who bring an emotional connection to a composition and make it their own through their voice.
Sanu reciprocated the affection, expressing gratitude to Malik for choosing him to lend his voice to “Sambhala Hai Maine.”
The interaction also prompted Malik to speak about his creative process and the way he approached composing and recording songs.
“A composer thinks alone about how to create a song, remembering Maa Saraswati. I used to record the song and then run away. I don’t know what used to happen to me — I would record, and then I leave, without staying for praise,” Malik said.
He added that although he did not wait for praise after recording his songs, he would often seek the opinions of others and was always ready to appreciate their work.
India’s Best Dancer Season 5 airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.
