India will look to seal the three-match ODI series against the West Indies when the teams meet in the second match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. Buoyed by their victory in the opener, the hosts return to a venue where they have enjoyed success in the past.
A stellar performance from Virat Kohli, backed by a century from captain Shubman Gill, powered India to a successful chase of 297 in Thiruvananthapuram. Kuldeep Yadav also played a crucial role with the ball, taking 4-40 to help India secure the win.
Guwahati holds fond memories for the Indian team, which has won both its previous ODIs at the venue. Kohli has scored centuries in both matches, while Rohit Sharma has registered a century and a half-century in his appearances there.
The venue has witnessed scores in excess of 300 in all four innings played in its previous ODIs, suggesting another potentially high-scoring contest. Both bowling attacks could again face a demanding outing after the run-heavy first match at the Greenfield International Stadium.
Kohli was in commanding form in the series opener, smashing an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls to lead India’s chase. Gill contributed 110 off 108 deliveries, while Rohit also made a positive start with 32 off 35 balls.
The West Indies batters, meanwhile, put India’s bowling attack under pressure. John Campbell scored 62 off 60 balls at the top of the order, while Justin Greaves struck 101 off 108 deliveries. The visitors raced to 135 without loss in 19 overs before India managed to slow their progress, with Kuldeep leading the fightback through a decisive spell.
Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 45 runs while taking one wicket, while debutant Naman Dhir gave away 33 runs in his five overs. Gurnoor Brar went wicketless, conceding 60 runs in his 10 overs, as Kuldeep’s performance proved instrumental in restricting the visitors.
The Indian team management could consider changes to the bowling attack, with Mohammed Siraj and Auqib Nabi having been left out of the playing XI for the first ODI. There could also be an opportunity for Dhruv Jurel to get game time, while Yashasvi Jaiswal remains another option as India seek to clinch the series.
