An Army soldier was allegedly abducted by a group of armed men while returning home from coaching in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, with his wife later receiving a demand for ₹10 lakh in ransom, police said on Tuesday.
The soldier, identified as 32-year-old Shriram Sihag, was on leave and preparing for the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination when the incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Monday near Kerpura bus stand.
According to police, five to six unidentified men allegedly intercepted Shriram and forcibly took him away in a vehicle. His motorcycle and helmet were later found abandoned at the spot, raising an alarm among his family and local residents.
The family said Shriram’s wife received a call from his mobile phone at around 11:46 p.m. The caller allegedly claimed that Shriram was safe and demanded ₹10 lakh.
“Shriram is safe with us. We will send the bank details. Transfer Rs 10 lakh to that account,” the caller reportedly told her before disconnecting.
The family subsequently approached the police, following which a search operation was launched.
Police said the family has expressed suspicion that a previous financial dispute involving another Army soldier could be connected to the alleged kidnapping.
Khandela Station House Officer Surendra Singh said Shriram’s brother, Sher Singh, lodged a complaint and informed police that Shriram had earlier been involved in a financial transaction-related dispute with another soldier from Karauli district during his posting in West Bengal.
Based on the information provided by the family, police have sent a team to Karauli to investigate the suspected connection. Roadblocks have also been set up in surrounding areas, while multiple teams are searching for the missing soldier.
According to his family, Shriram had been on leave for the past three to four months to prepare for the SI recruitment examination. He joined the Army in 2013 and is currently posted in Punjab.
Police said the case was being investigated from multiple angles, including efforts to identify the suspects, trace the soldier and verify the alleged financial dispute.
The recovery of Shriram’s motorcycle and helmet from the alleged abduction spot, along with the purported ransom call made from his phone, has intensified the investigation.
