MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced a joint public rally in Mumbai on October 4 to protest the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and invited political parties across the spectrum to join the mobilisation.
The two leaders said the proposed demonstration would be presented as a public movement rather than an event confined to their respective parties. They said they would reach out to other political parties to build a broader platform against what they described as concerns over the electoral-roll revision process.
In a joint statement, the Thackerays appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers, framing the proposed rally as a campaign concerning democracy and constitutional institutions.
The venue and exact timing for the October 4 rally are yet to be announced.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing political controversy surrounding the SIR exercise and reports about differences within the Election Commission. The poll panel has said that decisions related to SIR were approved unanimously, while Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer’s office has made SIR-related voter services, draft rolls and claims-and-objections facilities available to voters.
Raj Thackeray has separately demanded that the SIR process be cancelled and has criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the exercise. Uddhav Thackeray has also raised questions about the functioning of the poll panel and backed demands for accountability over the reported objections of the other Election Commissioners.
The proposed rally also marks another joint political initiative by the Thackeray cousins, who have increasingly appeared together on issues concerning Maharashtra and electoral politics.
